Reverse Osmosis Water Softener

Hardness in water is caused due to the presence of excess amount of Calcium and Magnesium salts. The presence of these salts prevent in formation of lather by soaps and are responsible for the formation of lime scales on tubs, basins and even on washing machines. Using reverse osmosis water softeners can effectively treat hardness in water. Reverse osmosis water softeners use reverse osmosis mechanism to decrease the hardness in water. The reverse osmosis process is a filtration process that effectively removes all the hardness causing particles from water thereby making it suitable for consumption.

In a reverse osmosis process water is allowed to pass through a 0.0001-micron semi-permeable membrane by applying suitable pressure upon it. This thin membrane removes all unnecessary particles from the water. A Cross-flow phenomenon is applied in most of the reverse osmosis processes, where the membrane continuously cleans itself. The brine collects all the rejected particles that are being dumped by the gradual motion of the fluid. A pump is required to force the water to pass through the membrane. This driving force helps to seclude the rejected particle thereby purifying the water

Reverse osmosis water softeners are very much efficient and are pretty much capable of restricting bacteria, proteins, sugars, salts, dyes and all other particles which have molecular weight of 125 daltons or greater. The hardness causing ions carrying a charge are effectively rejected by reverse osmosis water softeners. The probability of rejection of ions containing charges increases with the increase in the size of the charged particle. The larger charges are rejected as soon as they pass the membrane. The removal of positively charged ions of Calcium and Magnesium helps in softening the water and makes it suitable for daily consumption.

All reverse osmosis water softeners are rated by their water flow rates. Water flow rate in reverse osmosis water softener is defined as the number of gallons of useable water produced each day. The efficiency, productivity and the flow rates of reverse osmosis water softeners greatly increase with increase in pressure and temperature of the system that is installed for consumption. Most of the installed reverse osmosis softeners are named according to their flow rates and pressure applied by them. For commercial purpose the water softeners is rated at 36/45 implying that the reverse osmosis softener has a rating of 36 GPD (gallons of water flowing per day) and is at 45-psi water pressure. For industrial purpose, the systems have a rating of 45/60 at a maximum temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit. It must be noted that instead of the given rating the GPD of the system may vary according to the pressure and temperature of the installed system. Therefore it is very much critical for a first time buyer to have a check on the flow rate of the system before purchasing it.
